Speaker Series

Second Saturday each month | 10:00 am | Nature Center, 7380 Gabbiano Lane

Saturday, November 8th   |  San Diego County's Indigenous Peoples, Then and Now

In honor of Native American Heritage Month, Guest Speaker Laurie Gonzalez, Tribal Councilwoman of the Rincon Band of Luiseño (Payómkawichum) Indians and Vice Chair of the Intertribal Judiciary Committee of Southern California, will tell the story of

her people starting before the Spanish invasion, through centuries of upheaval, to

present times in which the Luiseño have rebuilt their sovereign Nation with a new

system of governance, and by “revenue sharing” have also supported and lifted up

more remote tribes in the County. Also discussed will be the role of the area’s casinos in

the infrastructure of the new sovereignty. This free event is suggested for those age 15+
